Shifting Crunch

I just saw a 94 d90 for sale in the "for sale" forum and one of the faults with the truck was that the tranny crunches when shifting from first to second. Mine has done this since 1998 (when my warranty expired) so I am wondering if this is a common occurance? The mechanic at that time told me to just start in second until i need to replace the transmission for 4 grand..
So far I've been ok starting in second but not sure if I'm damaging anything... Any advice?

Question

What oil are you using in the transmission ?

My 94 does that occasionally and I have the r380 installed. It only happens when I shift too quickly, so I just take it easy most of the time. I figure worst case scenario the synchro will blow and then I'll have to double clutch into second. A new trans isnt 4 grand, and while a hassle to replace, it isnt hard. Maybe RobD will weigh in with some advice that is actually informed by knowledge and experience, unlike mine!

Thanks Jim!
I'd switch to a quality manual transmission fluid such as Redline MTL, MTF94, Royal Purple Synchromax, or Amsoil and see if that solves the problem. If it doesn't, your synchros are probably substantially worn, in which case an overhaul is in order. $4K for just a transmission replacement is a bit much. Heck, for four kilodollars I'll rebuild both your transmission and your t-case, fit a new (Genuine) clutch, fix the rear main seal leak, and buy you lunch at a nice Mexican restaurant when you pick it up. You can PM or call me if you need more info.

Thanks Rob.. I'm going to upgrade the MTF per your suggestions. I'll let you know the results..

It's so ironic the the quote I got for $4k was from Land Rover Albuquerque on Alameda.. I lived in Corrales and used to take it there for service before I got transfered to Texas in 2002.. :-(

Where is your shop in Albuquerque?

Michael,
My shop is about 6 blocks from the dealer. I was still in Colorado in 2002, though.

Andrew,
I'm guessing Red River is 3-4 hours from Albuquerque.
