Mike,

Have you seen this rack pictured below? I plan on fabbing one eventually and it will sit on a 110 cage. I much prefer it because of its smaller height and overall bulk compared to the SD.
Why make a repro cage when SD still makes them?

SD is not currently making roof racks or baskets.

Umm...price perhaps?! Isn't that half the point of this thread - not getting reamed by SD?

The entire 110 external cage kit only costs about $2600. (plus shipping).

Get outa here! Really? I had a Rover guy down South (Florida, I believe) quote $5-6K for a used one! Needless to say, I stopped looking and started planning on fabbing one up.

Still though, I'm too cheap even at that price.

Yup, about 1300 pounds, just bought one last week.
Problem with fabbing one is the radius of the bends. Its a bend radius that no (or very few) US shops use and dies for benders are impossible to find in that radius. We ended up having to buy a whole new bender to be able to get the dies needed for the 90/110 cage radius(s) or is that radii?
you can get something close with most common US benders, but just a few degrees here and there throws off the entire cage.

Mike:

How could we go back at SD to get some roof racks made? Seems like there's several in this thread alone.

They won't be available 'till the spring. I wasn't able to locate any old stock from my suppliers but I'll keep trying on Monday.

Keith,

For what it's worth here is a link to a full line US importer for Safety Devices. http://www.stable-energies.com/ It is run by Bob Kakascik and his daughter and they are great people and service is top notch. I got my SD roll cage from them for my IIA Hybrid. They mainly deal with race cars BMW, Porsche, Audi but can get anything you want from SD. Give them a call with a part number and they will get back to you in a few days with a price and approximate delivery date. Where in TN are you? I Just moved to Hendersonville 15 min outside Nashville.
Cheers

I bet they could sell a lot of racks around here if they could manage to keep the price down.
They could count me in for one as well. But, as with all things Land Rover, I am sure they would be overpriced.

I'm of the opinion that the roof rack is nearly essential. Although you sacrifice some height restrictions, 90% of the time it means not going through the drive-thru or forgoing the parking garage. The amount of cargo space you gain and the ability to seat four comfortably by putting the gear on top is oftentimes indispensable.

I found my rack right here on this forum for a reasonable price and in perfect condition with all hardware with some patience. I'm all for someone fabing up a SD copy if they won't reproduce them in due time. There's alot to be said for OEM looks so I'm not real big on gaudy aftermarkets for an already unique vehicle.

Funny, Pat from SD told me last week they currently had no plans for racks unless demand was there and when I put out the word on this board I only had one taker for a rack. She told me they did not bring the jigs for the racks from the UK and therefore production will be way behind. Maybe she changed her mind. Who knows.

I just recieved an email from Laurette at http://www.stable-energies.com

and she said

"Daniel,

As far as we know they will be producing Land Rover roof racks by Spring
of next year. We are taking requests now and will contact everyone when
they become available. I will add your name to the list.

Sincerely,

Laurette Foshay"

she said 'Land Rover roof racks', but in my email i asked specifically about the Defender rack so i assume she means the same model.

Well, I think I have found someone who is willing to let me use their SD rack as a template. Hopefully I will get it over to the fab shop next week. We are going to explore some mounting options that will still allow the soft top to be used, mainly in the rear. I am still open to improvements and ideas. I will keep everyone posted and post some pics as soon as we get something started.
