Running Tdi without radiator?

I'd like to do a run test after timing belt change but without radiator, in case I have to pop open front cover again. Is this realistic? no ancillaries running, no fan, coolant pump, alternator or ps pump, just filling the block with coolant and making a loop on oil cooler hoses.

That sounds like a lot of work considering the radiator doesn't take very long to install/remove. How long are you trying to run it?

double check your timing marks ...put rad in and button it up ! yes you can run the truck with no rad only for a short time heat builds fast in a tdi by the time you fab the oil line bypass you could install the rad

I wouldn't think you would get a good determination on how everything is running until the engine heats up to normal operation temp? The thermostat will be closed, no coolant to the engine, until it reaches temperature. So I guess you could block everything off and run it but I wouldn't do it too long. Are you trying to see if everything is lined up correctly?

I wouldn't short cuts can prove expensive.

I ran the 200tdi without the waterpump to make sure I was on with the marks and adjusted the injection pump before closing it all back up. (never took rad. out though).

From what it sounds like you want to fire it up to see if it sounds normal and is running smooth. For a couple of minutes this won't be a problem.

the only shortcut I would take is just test filling the radiator with water instead of coolant. you can dump it and fill the mix when you are set. treat that aluminum head like it was a farm fresh egg.

I've run them without the rad or timing cover just to make sure the belt is tracking properly.

If you run it with no ancillary belt, like in this video, then there is no point in installing the radiator because your coolant pump won't be working.

Guess I put the rad on anyway since it wasn't my engine. Also for the sake of the oil cooler.
