Is there anything we can do to stop it?

I had a Detroit diesel engine that had an emergency kill flapper on the turbo air intake so if the engine started to run away on its own motor oil you could pull a cable and cut off the air supply to shut it down. Maybe something like that could be used.

It was an 8V92. after thinking about it, the flapper was on top of the supercharger but it served the same purpose. Sorry for your loss Buck.

A diesel runs away when it starts burning engine oil. Nothing can be done unless you can stop the air going in. Shutting off fuel no use.

Same happened to the fellow from NY with a 2.8 a few years ago except his issue was oil over fill. Sorry to hear about it.

Silver 8V92 = +450hp with twin turbos, supercharger and reworked injectors. It was in an Autocar road tractor. Oil seals in a turbo could go hence the emergency air shut off to save the engine. Had it happen to a John Deere tractor, the operator used is head, left it in gear, put the implement deep in the ground and stood on the brakes until it burned up all the oil in the crankcase. With a new turbo that engine ran fine for years...at least until we sold the tractor.

Thanks guys. I killed the switch, backed up, put it in 5th, dropped the clutch, just shot forword. It was going to do what it was going to do. All I could do is watch my tach ping at about 6k rpm, or where the 6 would be if my tach had one. Then it blew and shut down. The only good news is the engine was starting to give me issues already, so something was wrong that needed addressing.

It will start but only for a few seconds and blows an amazing amount of smoke. You can hear the pistons slapping something loudly. I killed the battery getting it out of there. I don't know which way I am going to go from here. The rig is also pretty bent up from the full roll. Not too bad I guess, but I like it to look pretty.
