RRC trans issue, or?

It's Always Something Dept.

Yesterday I drove the '88 RRC up to NJ to put on the ARB bumper that I left here last year, and pick up some parts that I traded to someone out in CA.

With the bigger (32") tires on the RR it sometimes takes a kickdown to 3rd to get up a long hill. Only on this trip it seemed to require more than usual. It got worse around Philly and then something started making a whining or whistling sound on acceleration only. I thought maybe a plugged cat, but the two fronts check out 6-700 degrees with the IR temp gun and the rear is about 400 so I think they are ok.

I noticed a few times it seemed like the trans was slipping i.e road speed did not match the gear and rpms.

Trans fluid seems ok, not burned and if anything a little high.

Engine compression tested last night was good around 150 all across and 165-170 wet.

Changed the fuel filter. Electrics/EFI are mostly new or redone as I am constantly working on them. No starting issues, usually fires off on the first crank or two.

I'm worried that running at 3k rpm in 3rd gear for some longer hills (5 minutes here and there maybe 10 at the most) may have damaged something.

Or that I succeeded in wiping the new cam, though I don't imagine that is the issue given the slippage, and the good compression results.

Also it seems to up shift to second way too early now. And it takes a long time to get up to speed from a stop.

Did I mention the whistling?

There is a Toyota pickup here possibly available to borrow that runs and drives. Though it is missing the sway bar.

I have a shitload of tools on board so taking a train back to DC isn't an option.

Any ideas or suggestions how to move forward here?

Thanks

When I first bought my 97SW the trans was sluggish, constantly kicking down and awkward IMO. I thought it was just me going from a 5speed ST to an auto. Turned out there was too much trans fluid. Flushed and replaced and things improved nicely over time.

This is your low mile Classic?
You know if there was ever any service to the ZF?
Maybe just drain and refill making sure the level is correct.

I had a 4.0L Jeep that had some transmission shifting issues that were resolved with a throttle position sensor. Not sure if the LR engine has this component but it was a similar vintage.

This was plugged cats. All better now. Just had to spend a few hundred bucks and listen to a stream of racist comments.

^^ He's cutting without gloves or proper eye protection...tsk tsk. ^^

So, did you get replacement cats or just gut them? (meow!)

So after seeing a trans thread this morning I decided to drain and refill my diesel ZF(of unknown history) since it was so nice out this afternoon

I am back in DC. The truck runs great, lots of power now. 4 out 5 Maryland State Troopers agree.
