RRC Fuel Pump Installation

Ok,

I have officially inhaled gasoline vapors for 2.5 hours, and I need help. (If I even get close to the fireworks tonight, I might explode)

I bought a 92 RRC with a bad fuel pump, after addressing the wiring issues, I hooked up the new fuel pump outside the tank, and it works great.

However, when installing the new fuel pump in the tank, I can't get the red locking ring to completely lock. Is this normal that this is a challenge? Or am I doing something wrong.

The fuel pump sticks out a little, which just like the previous pump, I can press down, the seal seems to be depressing right, but when I get the locking ring on there, I can get it to tighten, however, it seems like it doesn't follow the threads right, and eventually it pops right up. ( Especially if I try to tighten it to much.. which is obviously not normal since it took me forever to get this locking ring of). The threads however, on both the fuel tank, and locking ring are still great...

Can you guys look at the pictures, and see if the seal is on there right? or if you see something wrong?

I'll try again tomorrow, but I'm wondering if this is supposed to be a challenge?

Thanks!

It can be difficult to get the seal to press into the tank properly. The pump should be pretty much flush at the top of the 'spout' except for the small lip of the rubber seal...possibly the seal is getting fouled and you aren't getting the pump seated properly. Once it is fully seated, you should have no problem putting the locking ring on

These are usually difficult. Put the rubber ring in the tank first. Put some grease on the inside of it and push the assembly in. You'll have to keep some downward pressure on it so it doesn't pop out while you put the ring on. Every time I do one I find it annoying

Thanks Frank and Sam,

I'll definitely take both of your advise, and try again today.

I just assumed that this part would be very easy, and uneventful. I guess I was wrong.

Temps are dropping here in VA today. Would any of these components benefit from sitting in warm water to stay pliable?
