OK, old key finally broke off. Thankfully in my hand, not in the lock. However, with no spare door key, (different than ignition) Norman Green Bomb, still thinks he's locked. (95 RRC SWB).
Pulled the fuse to stop the security system from blowing the horn, but flashers are still flashing.
Any ideas on how to convince Norman, he's unlocked? Absent that can a locksmith make a key from two pieces?
My local locksmith that's been around since before I was born said they couldn't cut a OE steel key which I found interesting. Said it takes certain machine to cut steel.
I just had two brass ones cut. $2 each, I can make tons of them for what a steel OE costs to buy and cut. Just have to be careful and not turn the hell out of them.
I have been able to buy the steel blanks for $2 @ the local hardware store. Same Ace hardware store had zero trouble cutting the keys for me. Using these as spares to the originals on both the LWB and Cassie's D1. Hope that helps as a cheap alternative- less than $5 cut and out the door.
My classic used ILCO BLANK # x239 RV4
The company is based out of Rocky Mount so should have retailers in your area.
I remember once breaking the key to my pickup in the Home Depot parking lot, taking it in, and they made a replacement for me from the pieces. The employee who did it commented that if it was next week they wouldn't be able to do it, as the traditional machines were being replaced with automated ones. Employees with no training could use them, but customers in my situation would be SOL. Those are the only machines you see in Home Depot now.
I will prefer ACE hardware instead of hiring a locksmith.
