Idle RPM should be pretty rock solid around 700-750rpm when warmed up, a bit higher when cold.

I normally shift in about that range as well, sometimes higher. Once in a while I leg it out to around 4500 or so, but that's as high as I am willing to go, and only when I REALLY need to get around that tractor-trailer.

Idle is automatically controlled to be between about 670-730rpm. The V8 makes peak torque at 3100rpm. According to my owners manual, the engine is designed to be operated between 2000-5000rpm. I try to drive at around 3000 rpm or a little higher if possible for power, cruise at about 2000rpm for more economy. I regularly shift above 4000rpm. I will boot it to almost 5000rpm on occasion. The engine redlines at 5500rpm, at which time the ecu will start to cut the fuel injection. If you're shifting at 2500rpm you're missing out on a good part of the power band of the engine.
