Idle RPM should be pretty rock solid around 700-750rpm when warmed up, a bit higher when cold.
I normally shift in about that range as well, sometimes higher. Once in a while I leg it out to around 4500 or so, but that's as high as I am willing to go, and only when I REALLY need to get around that tractor-trailer.
