Rough Idle when engine is cold

Rough idle when engine is cold, but after driving for 5 min. is smoothes out.
Would a bad diode in the alternator effect the idle?
I had the alternator tested and was told it was find. But it idles rough when cold, and intermittently the amp-meter needle wavers.

the amp needle is wavering because the engine is sputtering...the drop in revs will cause a drop in current produced by the alt.

My 200tdi does the same thing, its very rough to start when cold but after about 2-3 min of white smoke when driving it evens out and idles fine with no smoke

the app-meter will waver occasionally hot or cold, thought that it may do this because of an intermittent diode issue that is hard to detect by testing the alternator
