Question Rotella T 15W-40

Your thoughts about using this oil in a 3.9L?

Cheers...

Same here. Just make sure to still keep the changes regular, I do a change whenever I see the pressure start dropping.

Discoweb thread on oil to use in rover engines: http://www.discoweb.org/forums/showthread.php?t=54420 (and some followup here http://www.discoweb.org/forums/showt...ht=oil+rotella with more actionable brand/oil details)
The original thread is very interesting, but at the end, I could still not list oils I should be using without further research (and likely printing the entire thread when going to the local oil shop), second thread is less detailled but at least provide simple information for us to use.

I figured that could be useful to all of us (and me when I decide it is time to do my own oil changes....).

When its really chilly out I notice the oil light stays on a little longer at start up.

I've been using it for years in my D90 with good success. I recommend it.

Thumbs up

Since Rotella T 15W-40 is a diesel oil, can it cope with the higher heat given off by a gas V8? I've read forums about it, and lots of Disco owners like it. What I find interesting is the forums state this oil has high temp/high shear properties as required for diesel engines, and our flat tappet 3.9L V8's can benefit from this property. I am questioning if there are any chance this oil could damage the catalyst over time. As far as oil change intervals, I would NEVER go beyond 3month/3k miles. It seems just about everybody has their own reasons for using specific oil brand//types.

Cheers...

In theory, yes. In practice, no.

I used the 5w40 synthetic in my disco but switched back to mobil one because the rotella caused a bit of lifter chatter on startup.

You obviously have no idea how hot turbo chargers get. If you are religious about changing your oil then you should be fine with whatever you are using. I would not use anything less than x/40 in my truck. I dont see how motor oil could hurt the CAT's but maybe I need to read a little more. I think the Rotella is fine for these trucks, it is hard to argue with the facts. The "evac system" is also important to the well being of Rover V8's so there is a little more to longevity than oil changes. Post up and read a little more on the D-Web a lot of good information on that BB.

I dont like the Rotella because I have to look at the oil pressure light for at least 4 seconds when I start up on a cold morning (~20degrees)....
