rooftop tent

I have a NAS 94 D90 in a half cab configuration (see pic, not mine). After removing the tonneau, I want to install a rooftop tent on the bed. The smallest ones on the market I believe measure about 48" x 48" x 11". After removing the rear diagonal roll cage supports I would mount as shown in pic 2. Or I could go with the Thule rack configuration (pic 3).

Or I could get one of those ladder-equipped full roof racks and mount the thing way on top. (More $$$)

Any thoughts?

I wouldn't remove the diagonals.

You will not like how it drives with it up on a rack. Now on the rear of the bed I'm not sure, shouldn't affect center of gravity as severally as putting it on the roof? Idk, I love the trailer idea...

Yes, safety issue. But those ROW Defenders without cages are pretty much naked aren't they? It seems their bulkheads are the only rigid structural pieces protecting the driver and passenger. Even the hardtops are just pieces of aluminum sheet metal bolted together. I figure even w/o the diagonals my NAS D90 is better protected than a ROW D90 w/o a cage.

What if you rotate the tent so it opens over the rear? You could leave the diagonal braces intact that way. May have to elevate it slightly to clear the spare tire.

I had a rooftop tent on those on a Sankey trailer - there are some photos in the thread 1300 miles in Utah

There's a video on youtube of some british journalist that mounted their on extensions tent to be flush with the cab on a 90 or series roof to lower the center of gravity in the dunes.

looked like a lot of the options on here:

The smallest available rooftop tents measure 48" x 48" x 11." The half cab configuration is almost exactly 48" from main roll bar to tailgate. Width-wise plenty of clearance. So, it'll fit without removal of the diagonals. Looks like the basic support bar configuration is going to work.

I have a 1988 110 hard top SW and am looking for a soft sided tent not clamshell design.
