Roll bar/roof rack?

Does anyone use the existing roll bar as a roof rack for things like a surfboard or kayak? I was going to get a factory rack, but being a surfboard is so light, I really don't see why I could'nt just strap it to the rear and middle hoops. Thoughts.

Not yet owning a D90 but owning a surfboard I can tell you that strapping to the roll bar would work fine (it does on a Wrangler).

That is what I do with my board with the top off. Just put a little padding under the board. The alpine bar can't be on though.

Thanks guys. It sounds like the surfboard will be fine up there. Waverider, what are you using for padding. I was trying to figure how I could make a pad to snap on or maybe just use some ties for now.

By the way, I yanked on that alpine bar and it did'nt budge. Does it require a bit of force or what?

If the alpine bar has been in for a while it may need do be beaten out with a hammer. Put a block of wood under it and hit the wood so you don't damage the bar.

I have some old pads I made to work. It works better with a longboard. I tried with my 6'1" and it wouldn't strap down good for some reason, I just throw the short board in the back. I want a Thule rack or whatever to clamp onto the roll bar to strap my board down with the top on.
