Just ran the carfax report, came back with an accident / damage report.... shows in 1999 "accident reported involving front impact with another motor vehicle moderate damage reported." Deal killer? Price was $28k with 101k miles.

Additional exterior pics below.

What state(s) did the carfax report list this truck being registered?

Gentleman... you have all been so helpful and I hope to be done bothering you on this topic very soon. But I am going to see another Defender this weekend that appears to be very clean. I've posted 3 pictures below of the under body and I wanted to see what your thoughts were. My friend went to take a look at for me, an unfortunately these are the only ones he took of the under body. To my untrained eye, it appears to be very clean. However, if you see any issues, please let me know as I'd prefer not to waste 5 hours of driving if I don't need to.

Thanks in advance.

In the future, tell your friend to take 15 pictures of just the undercarriage. That way he'll get creative getting different angles, views, etc.

This one doesn't look bad from what we can see here.

It's missing some key angles but what we can see it looks great.

Welcome Bradford! Trust me, these guys love this kind of stuff. They have been invaluable in the almost 10 years I have been a member here. I have learned that no question is a dumb one and that any can be answered here! Good luck with your search. You will be a proud papa soon!

Bradford - look at it this way mate....

Your intitial "investment" of $20K+ is only the beginning - you have to decide if that 5 hrs is worth it! If not, a good way to do it is have one of us close to it take a look for you. But I would recommend the drive. If not option B...call one of us.

This one looks pretty good from the 3 shots - rear cross member is nice diffs dont look bashed up - has a good looking sidestep tube...seems like you should investigate further.

I didn't see any gear oil dripping from the LT230. What's up with that? I have been under a lot of 90's and I thought they all dripped...something must be broken...

lol--looks clean.

It most likely is out of oil.

First truck: where's the soft top? Getting a Badger top costs best part of $3k
Since you seem to be finding rust free examples you can focus on the mechanicals.
Start with oil cooler lines under the hood

Gentlemen... Thank you all! Looks like this weekend I will finally be joining the club. Looking forward to scouring the forum for things to do it. Will definitely be ordering the oil cooler line upgrade immediately, any other suggestions though? The one I am buying is in need of some new tires as well, was looking at General Grabber ATs or BFG Rugged Trail TAs, thoughts?

No, that one had been a "moderate front impact accident" so I just didn't feel comfortable. I'm buying a SW in Houston.

Is this the 97' SW in Austin? Just curious as I am wading into the WTB pool in Houston and the pickings are slim to none here in the city.

Good to know, 39k was a nice price. I have e-mailed the seller several times and he seemed alright. I was considering a trip this weekend. I am about 10 minutes from Bush airport if you need any logistical advice. FOrmer Marine and VMI graduate so I have a soft spot for all things Virginian. Good luck this weekend and bring shorts, it is "warm" in Houston.
