Replacing my transfer case

Hello,
I'm new to the forum and new to Land Rovers. I have a 1997 Defender 110 that has been butchered over the years. It has a 300 Tdi in it and an R380 transmission. The current transfer case has a prefix of 28D which I know to be out of a Discovery. I know its bad and need to be either rebuilt or replaced. Because of where the Defender is I don't really have the option of rebuilding. I have a lead on a transfer case off of a discovery with the prefix 42D. I've read that the 42D didn't come with the user lockable diff, but that the mechanics where there for it. How much of a headache would I be getting in to to try to fit this to my Defender?
Thanks for the help!
John

and it's in Africa? I have an RRC rebuild in mine. you'll probably have to drill and tap for the parking brake cable bracket. there's some good threads on here. can't speak to what's involved in adapting a 28D for locking diff linkage.

BTW welcome!

I have a 42D in my 110. I swapped the rear output housing and gear selector hardware from my 1.4.
