Replacement of Chequered Plates

I have a set of chequered plates fixed to the top of the wings on either side of the bonnet, and the bolts are rusty so I would like to replace them.

How do you replace these bolts? Do you need to dismantle parts of the body to be able to get in and hold the nuts in place while tightening? Or should this be possible by opening the bonett and squeezing your hand through?

The land rover is a Defender 90 County model, with a 2.4 TDCi engine.

not sure many people here would be familiar with vehicles so new ...

Have you tried undoing them ... what happens?

Have you even tried to stick your hand in to see?
They could have installed them using rivnuts.

Post up a couple photos of the chequerplate. Probably done with locknuts and you should be able to reach in to hold the nut with the bonnet open.
