navydevildoc's thread should be able to get you through the process. Hopefully once you get it registered you won't get the letter in the mail from the DMV at a later date. I saw four more people with the letters this past week.

There is a company called cross country cruisers that imports diesel land cruisers in CA and they seem to be able to title / register them in CA so there has to be a way.

Registering my 86 d90 v8 in Ohio was just as easy as any other car. Took about an hour for the whole process.

Hopefully everything is good for you and there isn't a review of your paperwork. I get to look at 3 more cars next week for people that were issued titles then later received a letter telling them to take their car to the local CHP for an inspection or their registration will be suspended.

Feel free to PM me, I have a lot of experience in this.
Hi,
New to this forum and was directed to your expertise. I have exactly the same issues: I was given a temp permit for my 1987 90 200 TDI from my local DMV; they were OK with the typical VIN year discrepancy too. The vehicle was verified at the same DMV office. They sent paperwork to Sacramento. I then received the same letter regarding safety and emissions compliance (I was told to contact Land Rover). When I told them the vehicle had never been CA direct import they sent me to the black hole of CARB. CARB gave me some numbers for testing/compliance locations. One near me doesn't do it and the other in Southern CA said forget it, it'll cost $15K...and he said he had done other Defenders. Called back to Sacramento DMV to the Policy dept. and told that I'd hit a wall. They could do nothing and vehicle cannot be registered in CA.
Since the Diesel is pre-1997 and (according the CA DMV) smog exempt I started with this one. I also have a 1985 V8 110 I want legal, but I thought I'd start with the '97.
Your experience and kind advice will be very much appreciated!!
Many, many thanks in advance for any help you can give us.
GS

Uncle G..... Your chances of registering your rovers a very dismal! California does not recognize the 25yr rule..... The law has changed according to ca. DMV technical compliance division? There are about 5 or more, who have received that dreaded letter about being compliant.... Save your money .. Don't bother with a letter of COA or a heratage trust letter cause they won't work... You can ask preeb.... He sent his in to DMV and they kicked it back to him.... Katiemo was able to register hers and get plates for her d90 but months later. She got the compliant letter .... California hates DEFENDERS,

MY advice to you sell your trucks!
