Redneck AC in a 2 door 110

After installing the Diavia AC in our 1983 110 and being able to make a 30 minute+ drive without having your shirt stuck to your back, decided to install temporary AC in our 110 2 door.
We have a full LHD dash for this 2 door, but haven't the time to install it now.
So want to have some relief from the heat without investing in a RHD unit or having to convert to LHD and then install an AC kit.

We have some 10,000 BTU portable stand up AC units that draw about 1,200 watts each.
Also have a 2500 watt inverter.
And the vehicle already has a deep cycle battery for camping.
The plan is to install a second alternator (200 AMP).
This new alternator will be connected to the deep cycle battery that will be connected to the inverter.
The portable AC will be plugged into the inverter.
In theory when the vehicle is running at off idle speeds the alternator will produce a max of 200 AMPS which is roughly 2,400 watts.
At idle the inverter will run off the battery if needed when the current output is lower.
I am going to add a charge guard that will sense low voltage on the deep cycle battery and trip a 200 AMP relay to add current from the car battery and alternator (100 amp) to protect the deep cycle and help run the AC during extended at idle periods.
This may not be needed so will test for low voltage conditions first.
This 110 is a 2 door hard top with windowed roof sides.
Am going to replace one of the windows with plexiglass that has a clothes dryer exhaust vent in it.
The portable AC hot air exhaust hose will connect to the dryer vent.
When the AC is running, the flaps on the vent will open and close when not in use.
I think it will work.
Condensation is trapped in a removable reservoir that can be emptied, so don't even need to driil a hole.

Will attach some pictures when I get to this over the next few weekends.

It won't be quite that bad.

I'm a little surprised he isn't fitting the bed with a generator to run a BIG unit sitting on fluid filled isolators, flex piped to the cab...

I ended up buying the more expensive XS Power D5100 for the deep cycle battery to support auxiliary equipment.

XS Power D5100 12-Volt Deep Cycle AGM Power Cell Battery

When I called in the order, the salesman gave me a $20 discount with free shipping, but it still cost $230.

Dimensions:
Length 9.04"
Width 5.43"
Height 8.19"

According to measurements it will fit in the battery box with the car battery and is 12-Volt Deep Cycle AGM with 60 Amp hrs.
More than I wanted to pay, but will work just fine.

Because this can cover a 3000 watt peak surge, it is ideal for running auxiliary equipment that needs a large voltage draw like redneck AC when the 200 AMP alternator is idling and the portable 120V AC kicks in via the inverter...

Specs:
Cranking Amps 685
Amp Hours (AH) 60
Length 9.04"
Width 5.43"
Height 8.19"
Maximum System Wattage 3000 watts
BCI Group Number 51
Parts Warranty Duration 3 years
Labor Warranty

Awesome, great thread. Do you have any pics of your 110 with the Diavia A/C built in?

Just received the battery, 250 AMP AC Delco alternator with twin pulleys.
Also received the Rockville 1000 watt capacitor.
This vehicle will eventually be switched from RHD to LHD so didn't want to invest in an under dash unit and wanted to experiment with having a 120V inverter on board.

The Isuzu 4JB1-T engine has lots of power, so it will be able to handle the drag.
The power steering pump is twin pulley and adjustable making the alternator mount an easy fixed install (still have to machine the mounting bracket).
On non-AC models the right side of the engine has a single pulley idler which will be removed and the alternator mounted in it's place.

The alternator will produce 250 AMPs = 3000 watts.
The capacitor has a 1000 watt capacitance.
The battery is rated at 60 AMP Hrs with a 3000 watt surge capacity.
The portable 120V AC unit is rated to draw 1,200 watts.
In theory when the 120V compressor cycles on, the surge should not exceed an 1,800 (50% wattage draw (120 + 120/2 = 1,800) watt draw.
The sine wave inverter is rated at 2,500 watts and hopefully will handle the compressor surges without issue.

My theory on how it will work:
The alternator will not always be producing 250 AMPS (3000 watts).
When at idle in stop and go traffic, the capacitor will handle the surges on the AC side popping off an additional 1000 watts.
The capacitor was designed for audio systems to discharge when power is needed for base notes via woofers, so it is built to handle surges (not unlike a compressor start up).
The AGM battery is also meant to handle surges and discharge up to 3000 watts.
The battery combination of the 3000 watt discharge capability and the 60 AMP Hrs should be able to maintain idle periods during stop and go traffic especially with the 1000 watt capacitor that will charge fully in a few seconds.
When the traffic moves, the alternator spins up to recharge the capacitor and battery.
So this setup should be able to support the portable AC.

Engine configuration.
Shown is the alternator just sitting on top of the idler to show the size.
Note the twin pulley on the PS pump that will allow us to run 2 fan belts.
