Recommended Lubricants and Fluids - 1990 200 TDI Defender

I have an old service manual from the 90's, but I am looking for a webpage or feedback from members on recommended lubricants and fluids for my 1990 200 TDI Defender (124,000 miles).
  1. Engine
  2. Gearbox/Transfer
  3. Differentials
  4. Steering Box
  5. Clutch & Brakes
  6. Coolant
  7. Grease for grease fittings on drive shaft, etc.
  8. Ball Joint Assembly

Also, which drain plugs need copper washers?

Thanks for your help.

*Engine
Any diesel engine specific oil. xW40 viscosity. If cold starting in the winter, one of the synthetic 0W40 or 5W40 is a good idea. Otherwise any 15W40 is fine.

*Gearbox
Redline MTL

*Transfer
*Differentials
Any regular gear oil. xW90

*Steering Box
ATF

*Clutch & Brakes
DOT 3 or 4

*Coolant
Regular coolant

*Grease for grease fittings on drive shaft, etc.
*Ball Joint Assembly
Something that resembles grease.

Thanks

Thanks John,
Can you also tell me which drain plugs need copper washers?

Can I go to the local auto parts store to buy them or do they need to be specific to my vehicle?

Gearboxes and engine. They should be available locally. In forty years, I've never seen a need to change a sump washer on any car.

I suspect part of your question is, WHICH drain plugs need copper washers? The only one I can think had one is the engine oil drain.

Which fluids? Many people on this Forum like Shell Rotella for diesels. Widely available including Walmart & Kmart at about $14.00 per gallon.

These Rover manual transmissions originally called for automatic transmission fluid. Current opinion is modern ATF isn't the same as it was 20 years ago. As already mentioned, Red Line MTL is widely used on this Forum. (Unlike Rotella, it's expensive, I think I paid $15 per bottle.) DON'T use 'gear lube' in Defender manual transmissions.

For the other fluids, use your favorite brand, synthetic or not.

Mike
