Rebuild V8 or convert to 300TDi or sell as is

Situation: 1985 LRD 110 Wagon RHD V8 engine blew up.

Dilemma: Rebuild V8 vs. convert to 300TDi

My goal: Get her up and running and limit my loses.

I'm in Wichita, KS so not to many defender gear heads in the area.

I'm going to resell her after I repair the engine. I'm not a mechanic and would love some candid advice, recommendations, etc. Last thing I want to do is just throw any cheap rebuilt V8 under the hood to get her running, trying to maximize her original value.

V8 Rebuild - try to keep her stock as possible.
Pros
Cost ($)

Cons
Finding decent rebuilt engine
Finding right mechanic to install

300TDi Conversion Kit:
Pros
Better Gas Mileage
Increase total value

Cons:
Cost ($$$)
Finding right mechanic to install

Cut my losses (sell her as is)
Pros
Cash today

Cons:
Lose at least $10-13K.

Any recommendations or people that have a solid engine / conversion kit for sale, please do not hesitate to contact me. If you want a good project defender send a PM and I can upload or email you some pics.

300tdi is a non-starter to do this for profit. If you are having to pay someone to do it ... And especially because you have a shortage of expertise.

maybe you can put an early disco v8 and run it using your carb setup on top?

A rebuilt V8 won't be worth much more than a truck with a running disco lump.

Yep. Stick in a used 3.9 V8 from a junkyard if you are dumping it. Lots of them around for basically no cash. You could transfer over the EFI as well which might help resale.

That's what I was going to suggest.
He is in Augusta, KS. Just minutes away from downtown Wichita.
Big Rover gear head and specializes in Tdi. Hard to get a hold of though.

I don't think you will lose 10-13k because the old 3.5 died... seems those motors (at least in my case and a few others I've read about) get pulled almost as soon as you get the truck so not much value placed on them running or not… if you can't do the work yourself you might test the market as is.

a v8 110 is one of the few vehicles on the planet that doesn't loose much value when the engine dies.

As suggested, stick a good used 3.9 from a Disco in it and be done. All your existing stuff from the old engine will swap over. If you want to upgrade it a little but still keep things simple, stick an
Edelbrock 4bbl carb on it but going to EFI from the Disco is something that is an option too. A 300tdi is a great engine and will get you decent fuel economy but you can buy a whole lot of gas for what a conversion will cost you if you end up paying someone to do the conversion.

X2. How cheap?

Looks like the kids love your truck. Keep it if you can. Contrary to your first post here, there is nothing wrong with putting in another V8.

I'll take it!

Drag it out to Augusta/Andover and leave it in Pendy's driveway.

I've got an old Disco that needs to give up its non-rusty pieces...they'll slip right into the 110

Jim does excellent work and is pretty good guy all around.
His plate stays full, so best to check with him to find out when his next opening is and if he is currently taking on new work.

I believe he trades under Pendy Imports and you should be able to find contact info on-line or someone could PM you the details if you can't find them.

Good luck on your Rover journey.

So, what exactly is wrong with the engine? Really, this needs to be considered first.

Thanks to everyone for your advice. Exactly what I needed.
I will update you all with a decision, but really leaning towards rebuild / replacing V8.
To Red90 point, I'm digging into the exact problem of the engine, results will propose clearer options.

I appreciate all of you who have reached out regarding purchasing her as is.
Keep those offers coming via PM or call me. I'm happy to share more pics, skype or facetime to show you more of her. Call me at 316.305.7949 with questions, reasonable offers, etc.

definitely look into the existing engine.... unless there is a rod sticking out the side of the block or there is serious damage to the crank - you can probably fix the 3.5 for less money than any sort of replacement.

It is too bad you are not closer. I have a 3.5 nearly complete under the work bench that I have been holding on to for too long. It is supposed to be good - I got it for free with no promises. I would pass it along for the same price - but Kansas is not in local pick up range.
