Hi Pat, there should be almost zero play in the shaft however there must be a small amount of backlash in the diff, i can look up the figure if you want but it requires a rebuild on the diff to set up properly.

The play you are feeling is most likely due to wear in the splines on the half shaft at the diff end and the drive members on the hub.
A new drive member normally removes any play and associated clunk when pulling away, though it is worth removing the drive member and pulling the shaft to check the spines.

regards
Gren

Crossing my fingers.

doh sorry pat i was thinking one thing and typed something completely diffrent, jeez must be having a grey moment.

I just checked the play in mine and its about 3mm, can just get the edge of a small flat blade between the drive member and circlip.

regards again.!

they make shims to put between the c-clip and the flange to take up the play.

In this case it would be a couple of washer's!

Like Ron said the end float is fine Pat, pretty normal. In fact on the Toyota kit I let the axles float where they please, distance is controlled by the length of the spline and the cross pins in the diff. And a very close total length tolorance.
