Rear bumper or not?

I took the rear bumper off tonight to repaint the rear cross member and seriously thinking about not putting it back on.

My angles would be better without it.

The back of the truck looks alot cleaner (IMO).

Can I have opions on this; the good and the bad?

Does anyone have pics of a ST with the tire carrier and no rear bumper?

I don't know if the Defender rear crossmember is much stronger than a Series rear crossmember but if you backed a Series into anything above a tap and hit a rear corner, the crossmember would just fold up. I took my rear bumper/hitch off to paint the rear crossmember too but I like the protection it offers so I put it back on.

here is a picture of my old 97 I painted the rear cross member the same as the body.... not to everybodies task but the paint will last longer than a rattle can.

get some corner protection and rear recovery and you are good to go...

The stock bumper does drag.

wolf i have a rear bumper if you need one its crusty but you can fix it..

I prefer it off but I did make corner protectors. I posted a picture yesterday here on the random picture thread that shows it and here is one from this weekend

I would think if you're running larger tires with a large spare on the stock tire carrier, that removing the bumper would improve your angles only marginally.

I remember seeing photos from MAR 2009 where in one particular pit, almost everyone was either rubbing their rear bumper or spare.

Thanks for the replies. I think the corner protection would be a must.

Yes they are RW..............I have had them for 10+ years; had them re-powdercoated last summer. These will work w/ rear bumper also!

Trade for what? I have some rusty Series and early 110/90 parts, perhaps a dog, and maybe a 3 year old.

Todd - that white ST is beastie!

I'm thinking of removing my rear bumper even tho I had it all re-powdered last fall. The last trail ride but some grind marks in it and I think removing it will help in clearance.

Question for people that removed the bumpers - where did you buy the recovery piece? IIRC, Expedition Exhchange used to sell one but I couldn't find it on their site. I could go the Rovers North/Custom setup like Charles but last time I towed something was 2 summers ago.

EDIT: I think this is the one that will bolt right in: http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/201910.cfm

The one I am using is from a Series truck; I had an extra and put it to good use.................I welded some nuts on to the back of the rear cross member so I could easily remove. Thanks
