Rear bumper chequer plate issues

Has anyone installed rear bumper chequer plate and re-installed the NAS rear bumper step? Looks like if you were to install it, the mounting holes for hardware parallel to the bumper would have a hard time lining up given the thickness of the chequer plate. The bolts going through the bumper wouldn't be an issue, but those going from the base of the step into the body seem like they'd be about a half a bolt width off

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Don't do it.

Not unless you want your rear cross member to rust extremely rapidly.

That's what I was thinking. Also, If you are trying to cover rust you are just going to accelerate its growth.

Ah yeah I see what he's talking about now - I thought he meant the metal 5 bar tread plate that came installed on the rear step bumper on '97 LEs.

Think I'll have rust even if i powder coat the bumper and step, and put a rubber gasket between the bumper and plate?

Are you talking about the rear step bumper or the rear crossmember? Or both?
