Rack mount Awnings?

I'd looked at awnings a while back, and the only ones I saw were from Hannibal, and they cost nearly a grand--no way in he77!

I thought I'd next look at an RV supply place maybe...

I saw a Defender this weekend in Newport Beach, CA that had a good looking one, but I couldn't locate a logo on it or determine the brand.

There HAS to be an affordable generic retractable awning that'll fit on top of the factory rack, no?

Made it further than half of the other guys, but the Hammers won.

Agree, the price of the Hannibal type of awnings are a rip off.
Do a search for 'Fiamma'. A massive Italian brand that's very popular in Europe and around half the price of any of the overland/adventure, therefore expensive brands. You must be able to get them in the states.
Only downside is they tend to come in gaudy RV style colours and patterns.

Torrence,

I would check some of the vendors I listed in the 'Hannibal' post... try Tim in Canada, I think they might have some on blowout, unless they're gone like the tents.
I'd also check other 'tent' manufacturers, like Magnolia/Eezi-Awn/Howling Moon because they're all about the same. Also there are other manufacturers that don't necessarily make rooftop tents, some make the one's that kind of go on the back of your truck and if I remember correctly they also make awnings. They're probably not the THICK canvas of a South African rooftop tent manufacturer but I'm sure they'll do.

And lastly, something I was going to mention to guys looking for bikini tops... Check your local 'canvas' shop (if there is one) and ask them how much it would be to... well... 'make you something up'...

Just a suggestion.

Nicholas

I have a old style Hannibal awning on my truck. From the looks of it it would be fairly easy to make one if you had access to a welder. The Hannibal is aluminium but could easily be made out of a lighter weight square steel tubing. Have a local upholsterer sew up the fabric. I am in Burbank if you want take a look at it.
