I've got a 5th gear "buzzing" in my R380 that I've been told is a layshaft support bearing. I am in the decision making process regarding an Ashcroft rebuild and have started to look into the removal and refit.
I have a 300tdi with R380 and LT230 driveline. I have pulled and replaced a few Series III gearbox/T-cases using an engine hoist and out the passenger door method. Is it possible to drop the R380/LT230 down through the bottom and onto a pallet using the same hoist? I do have a heavy floor jack and have seen adapters intended for transmission removal - I assume that, despite the weight rating, I will not be able to remove the R380/LT230 together with this tool?
Also, the manual indicates the radiator needs to be drained, exhaust unhooked, etc.? Are all of these processes necessary? I have learned using the Series Land Rover "Green Bible" that with a little ingenuity a lot of these processes are unnecessary - is that the case with the Defender?
Thanks in advance,
