Questions About Instrument Wiring

  1. Can't find where voltage is measured in the wiring diagram. Where is the best spot to measure voltage from?
  2. Is it OK to have instruments like the water temp gauge hooked up to 12v live all the time? (Key off and out, still with 12v)
  3. Is there any reason why I should not pig-tail the 12v to each of the 3 or even 6 instruments in line?
  4. Is there any reason why a fresh ground harness, pig-tailed in line from one instrument to the next should not be used?
  5. Would this hold true for the three instruments I need to wire the lights to?

About monitoring the battery: Should this be fused? Should it be relayed to the ignition so the gauge only registers when in run position?

I assume all 12v supplied lines need to be fused, if not already?

Thanks for the answers.

No fuse no relay on this particular circuit. You can use small stuff if it's a battery monitor but if this has an amp meter whole other story. Generally yes you fuse all circuits, this protects the WIRE not the thing being powered.
If this device has amp meter in it then it needs a shunt where main 12V hot goes to the wire harness supply. This way you see all the amps flowing from battery to truck.

Unlike the newer truck not all of the older years especially series had all of the wires fused, mainly the brown wires and some white.

Yeah, I'm starting to track down the instructions for these gauges at various places online. Some are different than others, so it's frustrating. None of my gauges came with any instructions.
