Question for the experts?? VNT turbo EGT probe placement

Ok I just finished installing my Allisport VNT turbo but you cannot us the EGR block off plate to install my EGT probe as there is not enough of an opening there to fit it through. My question is this - since there is still some blow by coming out of this cavity ( see pics) can I not just drill a hole through the manifold within the cavity since there is already some minor exhaust coming from here and reinstall the probe I was using with the original turbo setup?

Thanks in advance for the help?

Brian

brian, can you explain more clearly why you can't mount the egt probe into the egr blanking plate?

From your photo there seems to be no reason that I can discern as to why the egt probe cannot be mounted on the egr blanking plate.

Can't really see but there is no real opening in the cavity from to the manifold, moving my finger around there is no opening at all, started the vehicle and had exhaust coming from the lower bolt hole to mount the egt, put the bolt in the whole and now there is minor exhaust coming from the opening but minimal. Basically they didn't actually open the cavity to connect to the manifold as per the original?

Does that make sense?

Thanks,

makes sense, thanks! I don't have an answer, but it looks like the VNT hotside housing is cast to blank off the EGR. Strange...

I have VNT but for Defender 200tdi. A question for you OP, did, the hot side have gasket that went between the downpipe and the turbo?

looks very similar to the stock manifold and egr casting. Could you weld the EGT probe bung to the blanking plate on a roughly 45 degree angle or what you think fits the best? That's basically what we did on mine for the stock setup a few years ago. Upside is blanking plates and bungs are cheap if you get it wrong.

i think the issue is that the vnt egr casting is not actually open to the exhaust gasses

So you can reinstall the EGR and look like you're still compliant with the original emissions setup?

So the question really is would that lower bolt hole put you too close to the turbine wheel? you may be better off going through the top hole which looks like, with a longer probe, it should put you right where you want to be in terms of EGT.

Sorry, the pic you posted is exactly the set up I had for my egt probe prior to installing the VNT, my question is since there is already some exhaust leaking but not an opening enough the get the probe through in the VNT egr cavity can I just drill a hole through the casting in the egr cavity big enough to fit the probe through and install it the same as I had with the original turbo?

Basically my thought is to have the vehicle running, drill through the casting in the egr cavity with the exhaust gases pushing out any possible shavings, re install probe through drilled hole?

Anybody see any downsides to this?

Thanks.

Brian

Unless your 300TDi runs a lot smoother than mine, I can't imagine trying to drill while it's running. The hole shouldn't need to be too big to fit the probe through, so shavings should be minimal, most of which will end up in the cavity area. The rest will blow through once you run it.

Really though, there are people on this forum that are more knowledgeable than I on this. I also suggest that you ask Allisport directly. I expect they'll be pretty responsive and will be able to give you good direction. Can't imagine that most people installing this VNT don't go through the same thing where you'll be pushing EG temps.

Thanks for the reply, am also waiting for Andrews reply to this from Allisport. I know most just drill and tap somewhere else on the manifold in this scenario but since I already have the blanking plate with the proper length probe in place and there is some exhaust gases escaping here already I just figured this would be an easier solution for me.

Cheers,

Brian
