Update: Thanks all. I called Mallory. They recommended 8202 with ballast resistor.

Hi Guys,

I know this is an old thread but figured I drop a couple lines.

93' D110- Owner has a MSD Marine Ignition Controllor, Bosch Coil (1.1 ohms) and Mallory Distributor 4768901. Recently replace ignition pickup module with Mallory 605. Ran great for about 100 miles, then stumbles and misfires like crazy. Tempted to remove MSD box and install ballast resistor.

Anyone else had problems with a MSD box in this setup?

-Thanks,
Peter

The problem is the ignition controller gotta go factory. You can do Mallory coil and distributor but you will lose your mind trying to get that to send the right signal. Remove, test, you're right.

Any idea why the the ignition controller was introduced into the mix? It is not needed. I'd remove. Good idea to install the Mallory 700 ballast resister, or equivalent from JEGS for $15. Considering the 700 is now becoming NLA, check out the price of this hoarder! I just purchased a spare last month for $24. LOL. Should have grabbed a few.

all of these work great with the factory ignition module

- DIST,BUICK V8 215-350 UNIL VA..... Part No. Mallory # 4764301 MSD # 8548
- Mallory PROMASTER(r) Coil Part No 29440
- Active Power Filter . . . . . . . . . . . Part No. 29351

- Replacement UNILITE(r) module - part # 605 if you need to replace a burned out one.

trust me. i had the HYFIRE® 6A ELECTRONIC IGNITION CONTROL Part No. 6852M

and

- Mallory tach adapter.... Part No. 29074
- Mallory Ignition Ballast Resistor Part No. 700

in the mix. all a bunch of parts that i kept buying to come to the conclusion that the MSD box isn't compatible.

So, was the factory ignition module a NLA Lucas part or was it actually the same Unilite part that User Name is citing?

Has anyone had issues with the combination of parts that User Name is recommending?

Active Power Filter is NLA. It got nixed by MSD when they bought Mallory. I talked to them directly about a replacement and there is not one.

So, does anyone have an idea for a substitute?

The power filter was a precaution that hasn't bothered anything.

Downshift-

Which plug wires are you using? I'm removing the MSD box and installing a ballast resistor this weekend. I want to make sure I get quality wires to prevent noise to the Mallory 605 pickup
