Portal Axles?

A fella in the gargae next to mine imports Mogs, Rovers, Volvos and Pinzgauers. I know he has at least one if not two sets of portal axles out of a Volvo 303. He can be reached at www.real4x4.com, his name is Vince Sweeney.

I just received a shipment of (6) 404 portal axels. I only need 2, so I am going to sell the other 4. $150 each plus shipping. Shipping is running around $45.00, ground. Also, if you need gearing, I will sell that too. And swamp land in florida! Seriously (yes, all that before this was a joke), what does something like that run?

Chris, I'll take all four at that price.

All, I have four Portal Axles that I'm selling for a bargain $1,500 per axle.

Getting a little greedy there Glenn? I can source a pair of 404's for $1400 front axle complete and $900 rear complete. Well, at least I could 10 months ago. Maybe the price went up.

Made it further than half of the other guys, but the Hammers won.

I haven't seen any examples here in the states but if you search you should find some from Europe or the far east.

The Volvo 303/304 axles used to be a good fit. Not sure how hard they are to find these days.

You have a few options :

1. Swap out to Mog axles if you can find some but there heavy & will need work to fit a coiler.
2. Swap out to the Volvo C303/304 axles but these are hard to find, harder in the US (as already noted).
3. Convert to Spidertrax axles with portal boxes, very bling
4. Buy the Tibus portal boxes and bolt onto your existing axles (similar to the old Maxidrive ones).

Any of the above will cost a fair bit of $$, the amount of work need to install prob ranges from 1/2 being the most involved to 4 being fairly bolt-on with minimal custom work required.

Check out D&G Tunings project 'humbug' it uses Axletec portal boxes on Spidertrax axles

https://www.dgtuning.com/projects/14...bug?page=0%2C3

Hope that helps....

Those straight cut gears must be loud as hell at highway speed.

I'd suggest you also ask on some of the UK and European forums that have more winch challenge competitors posting on them. I haven't seen many portal'd D's this side of the pond.
