It is common to just build a crossmember in the UK, check out some of the build threads on lr4x4.com, it looks pretty straightforward.

Ya the crossmember has been patched and that lasted all of about a year before more rust has shown through. I am afraid that to get to good metal I would need to chop about 2 inches or so off the chassis and then marry up the crossmember.

Any half-decent welder should be able to cut off the current one and box up some extensions.
