Overcooling

Hello.... some guidance needed...... my temp gauge has been running for last couple of weeks on the white, meaning very cool, now in the 40-50 degree weather, it rarely comes above the white area. Yesterday for less then a minute it was mid point, where I assume it should be. That leads to think that the gauge is fine and the thermostat is bad, and just wide open and constantly cooling the engine. ANyone have any input? just want to make sure I'm looking at the right things. I have very limited novice experience with defenders. I have a 1995 Defender 90 with 90K.
I'm also going on a 5 hour trip in a few days and was planning on bringing her for the ride. Would the overcooling be hazardous to her health?
Thanks for any advise.....

Have you verified the trucks temperature? Using an infrared thermometer or the like? Maybe the sending unit is not working correctly, or the gauge is broken.

Have not verified temp, heat in truck is fine, if that means anything, seems it does fluctuate some, very minimal but does move. I tend to think its stuck wide open......
do you think its ok for the 5 hr drive?? doubt I can get one and installed in a day......
