Oil questions New D90

Hi,
So i just bought a 86' defender 90 and was inspecting the under carriage and it seems like there is a slight oil leak. On the outside of the oil sump it seems like there is a lot of dirt and oil built up into a cake like film. I was wondering if this was something to be concerned about or is it just missing a good cleaning? There is a drip or two on the garage floor every few days.
Thanks,
Brandon

Any unrelated advice is appreciated as well!

Don't wear spots and stripes, never eat yellow snow and look before you leap.

Oil leaks are just one of the many leaks your defender will exhibit. Water gets in from the sky ... Oil drips out onto the floor. Totally normal.

A drip or two every few days??? That's not a leak when it comes to Defenders. She's just marking her territory...

The leak looks like it comes from higher on the engine. What does the top look like? The only way to find and fix leaks is to clean the engine and see where the leak is coming from (unless it is really obvious).

You sure that is not a diesel leak? It does not look black enough to be engine oil.

Clean them off with the pressure washer and please check the levels of t-case, tranny and diffs. I was fairly sure that it was oil leaks, the injection pump didnt leak. It's a 20 year old diesel motor, its gonna leak.

Defenders are like radial engine airplanes...If they're not leaking, they're empty
Leaks are a really good thing!

Looks like almost every defender I've ever owned. The KEY is to check the fluids. You might want to drain all fluids and replace with what you know are the right fluids and start with a clean slate.
