Oil Pressure Gauge vs. Light

Was just looking at my dash and questioned, what is the different between the oil pressure gauge and the oil pressure light on the dash cluster? (besides one being a gauge and another being red light that could come on)

Are they connected to different senders?

Yes. The light is connected to a switch that usually comes when pressure drops to about 5 psi or less except when the switch self detonates. It that point every pint of oil is sprayed out under pressure through the broken switch making one hell of a mess. You'll know something is wrong when you smell oil burning on the exhaust and the engine starts to tick. Another LR moment of genius. The other is actually a sender that varies resistance as oil pressure varies. That ohm change causes the gauge to fluctuate accordingly. The gauge is a great addition to the near worthless oil pressure light.

Where is the switch located in perspective to the sender?

Yea , I noticed my oil light was not working this weekend, it wasn't lighting up just before turning the engine on. Determined the pressure sender is bad. Easy to overlook before starting. If the sender fails, you get no oil light. To find out, ground the wire at the sender to chassis, then it will light, this means the sender is bad.
