Oil/filter recommendations

Hi there new to the site and Defenders. I have a 97 Defender with a new motor, 3.9 v8 I believe. I see that Mobile 1 and Rotella are recommended. Just seeing if that's changed. Thanks in advance.

Modern oils are not the best as they have flat tappets. You want an oil designed for a flat tappet engine. There are a bunch out there. The diesel oils like Rotella were a good choice, but they have recently cut back on the zinc, so it is not as good of a choice.

Last I looked the analysis for rotella showed a lower level of zinc although I think there are a bunch of other more modern additives in it to replace the zinc. I have no idea if they are as good or better for the flat tappet design. I think the synthetic rotella has quite a bit more zinc in it and that's what I put in my disco 1. It's in sale right now at autozone in my hood.
