Oh stereo gods, speaker to me!

I have found what I think are a set of really nice speakers to fit in the holes left by the original RRC wuss-tacular a/d/s junk (which are available to anyone who is a stickler for originality and doesn't listen to the radio or music) here:
http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAu...appa_429i.aspx

If I put these in the front doors and rear over the liftgate they should sound pretty good, yes??
I am going to see if the sub box is worth saving. I hope so.
Please give me a sign i am not off track here...

And what do I use as an amp to drive them?

Not big enough, particularly for the doors. Small speakers like those are great--but when they are down at calf level, they just don't have the punch as they are mostly treble biased which is directional. So my advice is to go as big as you can possibly fit. There is definitely a depth issue, not just diameter, so selection there is crucial. I wouldn't go any smaller than 5-1/4" and some folks have fit 6-1/2" into their doors. I would do that and use separates with tweeters mounted on the dash--I haven't done my separates, but that is coming.

As far as Infinity Kappas go, they are great. I am running the 6x9 in the back of my 90 for 8 years and they are everything I have hoped them to be. I would not go smaller than a 6x9 IMHO in the rear--I do run them in separate boxes at the back corners of the tub. I also run an Infinity Basslink right behind my cubby box (between the bulkhead bar) and I have amps under the passenger seat in the box. I like the way mine sounds, but there is room for improvement.

I think just using the 4" ers would be way to tinny and the use of a subwoofer with them would miss all the midtone.

That's all that fits without hacking the door cards

Crown14 and I were briefly talking speakers last weekend.
I believe he fit some slightly bigger ones in the rear headliner area; not sure about the front.

For speakers of that size, they are a good choice and a good price. As far as an amp goes, the have a JL amp that looks to be a good size to run 4 of them, although you may want a different amp if you plan to power a sub http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAu...io_JX3604.aspx

Thinking Bill should sport a pair of Beats. Who wouldn't pay to see that?

I would pass on the amp with only 4 - 4" speakers, unless you plan on hooking a sub back up.

I put alpines in my classic when I had it and it sounded really good just getting pushed off the head unit. It lacked any low end characteristics, but I figured it was a Rover after all.

The Kappa is a nice speaker too.

ETA:

I don't know if you are planning to keep the original head unit.......if so, then perhaps you might want an amp as I'm not sure how much power it puts out.

Isn't the ADS so wacky system where everything is weird? Like the stock amp won't drive normal speakers etc.

My advice- stereo shop. Pay for a modern system and if it doesn't meet your expectations take it back until it does.

Bill...you need to ditch the factory amp and put a good 4 channel in. Then you replace the rear roof mounted to components and the fronts to components. The sound will be awesome. Don't need a sub in them, period.

Sub works well too... Doesn't have to be a 15"... I have a 8" and it makes a big difference... X2 on the components but you don't need to go that far...

Working off bad memory (my RRC was totaled n 1997) but I would suggest the largest speaker you can fit in the door which in the case of my 1989 was a 6 1/2" in the lower part of the door, a 4" in the factory location and tweeters up high. If I had to choose between 4" speakers in the upper factory locations (not sure if your doors are the same as my old '89) or 6.5" coax speakers mounted down low with no other tweeter, I would pick the 6.5" ers.

The factory a/d/s 4" are actually very good but will do nothing below 170hz and the factory sub is only two 6.5" drivers if I remember correct. I would try to talk you into keeping the a/d/s speakers, and installing a decent sub before doing anything else. You could likely tie in a jlaudio sub amp and keep the factory amp. Hell, if the factory subs are toast pick up a bazooka tube sub. that thing is so damn efficient the factory amp could run it no problem or get a powered version.

Failed to mention the factory a/d/s amp and crossover setup is likely protecting the front 4" speaker from any bass below 170-200hz. If you hook up anything larger than a 4" to those channels, it will likely still sound like a 4".
