off-set clutch in 300tdi match up to r380

looking for some information/help doing a conversion, 94 gas to 300 TDI bought from a guy named Duncan.
Part of the pkg. is an "off set clutch assembly" that is supposed to eliminate the need of replacing the transmission shaft with a longer one. R380 for gas.
The problem is that what I have received clearly does not work, does anybody have any experience with this kind of assembly? Is even such a kit? Duncan is indicating that the shop simple does not know how to do the work.

Not heard of such a thing. I think the bolt pattern on the two engines is different and you need the correct bellhousing for the engine.

Mike,
right on the bolt pattern, but as for the clutch apparently the clutch plate assembly is offset to accept the shorter us shaft on the r380 tran.[gas] as compared to the diesel.

This sounds similar to what m&d engineering does. They supply adapters for your V8 r380 to mat up to a 300tdi. Do you have an adapter plate or is it a clutch assembly that extends out?

Can you post up a photo of what you got?

Don't think that would last too well

My understanding is that the real difference is with the pilot bearing size and location and that needs to be addressed.

Do not know, was told by the guy that sold me the engine, bell-housing and off-set clutch plate that this is all that is needed.

John,
I guess I should add that the shop that has my D-90 is saying that this will not work(even if it snows in hell) and that I need a longer shaft from the transmission(for a diesel)

Yes, I would assume you would need a custom flywheel that is spaced over and contain the pilot bearing.

The problem is that some "hacks" have done it before. The spline engagement is wrong and there is no pilot bearing support. It "works" but the clutch and gearbox are subjected to things they should not see.

Yep, the bolt pattern for the engine to the transmission won't match, you'd find it easier to get a diesel R380 transmission.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/R380-Gearb...#ht_600wt_1091

As you can see in the photos for this item, the bolt pattern isn't anywhere near the same.
