Now it wont run at all

Hello All,

This thread is somewhat of a continuation of the issues we started discussing in the NoVa HH thread right after last weeks HH.

After many ideas being thrown around, we determined that the ECU controlling my 3.9 was the incorrect ECU. It is part # AMR1432, and was born meant to control a 4.2 in a 93-94 Classic. We found that not all 14CUX ECU's are equal, because that one made my 3.9 run on only the odd # cylinders, and very poorly to boot. Lavenders ECU out of his D90 (AMR3947) worked excellently for my truck. The bad thing is that the AMR3947 is very hard to find, which is reflected in the price ($1100 for a USED one!). To me, this is also reason to believe that not all 14CUX ECU's are equal, since a Disco 1 ECU can be had on Ebay for $150 any day of the week.

I reached out to British Boneyard, and a few other places, to find an ECU that might work. Neil at British Boneyard was kind enough to overnight an AMR3729 (94-95 3.9 Disco). I received the unit today, put it in, and my truck wouldnt start. I tried putting the old ECU back in, which doesnt make the engine run correctly, but it at least made it run. The engine still wouldnt start. It will turn over, and there is spark at the spark plugs, but it will not fire. I disconnected one of the fuel injector plugs, and tested the contacts in the plug while trying to start the engine. Nothing. No burnt fuses, fuel pump still runs. I have no idea what is wrong. I didnt change anything in the engine bay, or with the wiring anywhere. It seems that neither ECU now wants to tell the fuel injectors to spit fuel into the engine.

Galpin suggested hooking up a Rovergauge to see what codes I am getting, but it could be a while before we are able to get together to do that. Are there any other suggestions? I am just about at my wits end with trying to get this truck to run.

Thanks in advance,
Kent

Possible you knocked a wire loose on the loom pulling the connector on and off all those ECUs?

I hope not, and I feel like it would probably do more harm than good if I tried to dismantle the loom to inspect those connections....

Galpin and I are going to try to meet up today to see if we can get the Rovergauge to tell us anything.

Check that your main & FP relay.... and any other connection near the ecu. I'm with Flash that something got knocked loose. If that doesn't work, start running through the EFI test list from the beginning.

Your harness is from an 95 RRC right?

My offer stills stands if you want to test with my spare ECU. If it works for you maybe we trade one of yours if it will work in mine.

Reading through this I can so sympathize with you.

My P38 is on its third BECM in less than six months.

The replacement we just put in there, now it won't even start. At least the one we took out, it would start.

I've been in a rental car going on six weeks now while we try to figure this thing out.

I calculated it up and including the rental car I'm in this repair for 8 grand.

With the ignition on, you should have power to all 8 injectors. The power is supplied on a Brown/orange wire from one of the 2 EFI relays (silver or brown). The ECU supplies ground to the injectors to fire them. They are bank fired...all injectors on one side are fired by the ECU simultaneously. If you only have one bank of injectors firing, it could be an ECU problem. The EFI relay is turned on by the ECU. If you have no power to the injectors, start your troubleshooting at the relay.

I have probably swapped a dozen 14CUX ECUs and other that the one that had water in it for a few years, they all ran my trucks fine. Even the one with water in it ran the truck fine once the water was drained.

Look at the connector ends and see if one is bent or corroded.

Opened the main wiring loom socket to inspect the wire connections, and found everything to be clean and solid. Performed continuity tests on the ground pins, and tested the 12v pin for current. All check out good. Still not able to establish connection when hooked up to Rovergauge.

Called it a night, and closed up the garage in frustration once again.

Galpin suggests checking the tune resistor on the harness. Will do that tomorrow.

My harness does not have a tune resistor, or even the spade connectors to indicate a place for a resistor.
