Noise going into reverse

I have looking at D90's and most have been stick, but I was looking at a 97 a few weeks ago and it made a noise when the driver put it in reverse. The guy is a Rover mechanic and said they all do that.
If you want me to describe the noise it was like a clunk.
Thoughts?
TIA

According the factory service bulletin, that is due to "an unfavorable stacking of tolerances." Really.

It's normal. All of my Rovers do it and they have auto. Apparently it's driveline slack.
