No hi-beams & dash lites get dim

Everything runs fine but when I switch on the high beams, all headlights go out. The dash lights also get dimmer and I can hear a belt squeal...assumption is alternator.

This seemed to happen after the ignition switch was replaced, but not sure because don't often use high beams or horn.

Headlight switch problem, ground problem?

Thanks,
Pete

I would say it sounds like a ground issue and not the switch. You mention the lights come on fine and only go out once you put on the high beams?

Right. The headlight low beams work fine, and when I flick the brights on, the low beams go off but the high beams don't come on. At that time, there seems to be an increase in electrical draw because the dash light get dimmer (dimmer than usual I should say ).

(Also the horn was just a blown fuse.)

Thanks

The problem happens when I push the brights lever away from me (toward the front of the truck), but when I pull the brights lever toward me, both the low beams and high beams go on and the dash lights don't get dimmer.

Sounds like the "Magic" light wand has a short in it. Pull the cowl and inspect the contacts on the wand for where the smoke got let out. If one/some of the contacts are grounded then it will put a real heavy load on the alternator and electrical system. Don't catch fire.

Well, thankfully nothing has been smoking. I'll check the contacts tonight.
Thanks
