new to me d-90 sits

They guys, I just picked up 1994 #1138, I met the seller at a comon location and was soo happy driving home. I changed my clothes and drove to work that night, I go to start it the next morning to go home and it won't start, cranks over tried starting fluid, finialy I hold the throttle down all the way and crank for a minute at least, it sputters, it sputters alittle more, alittle more and blows smoke and reves up. Anyway here it sits cause I don't want to waste the starter to start it like that again, spark is very weak it has a MDS coil that looks new and I just want to thank Sam from Salida for telling me how mechanicly sound it was. I have searched the problem it runs great warm it starts easy warm. How do I test the coil and Ignition module on distributor, not wanting to put alot of money in the V8 as a 200 tdi conversion sounds apealing. I guess I just needed to vent thanks for being here for me.

Based on your symptoms "weak spark" does not sound like the issue.

I would guess some kind of fueling problem.

It is a process.

I would start with a pair of silver relays and an ignition module as you are going to need them as spares eventually and a new cap and rotor and wires if they look at all suspect.

Yes $20k. I think I did ok on the purchase but his mechanic was a hack.
I need more info on silver relays? where are they located and can they be tested?

Search Silver relays. 94- on your firewall or under the passenger seat.
Do you hear the fuel pump whine when you turn the key to ON?
If not, Switch one for the other and see if the fuel pump comes on. If it does come on, switch them and see if it still comes on. If not then that's the bad one, if it comes on with both positions, not the relays or fuel pump. If it doesn't come on at either, it could be fuel pump or both relays (seems less likely).

Can you hear the fuel pump running when you turn the key. Mine did just this before the pump took a piss. It worked off an on then just died.
Good luck.

Check for a strong blue spark at the spark plug leads when cranking. If you have a good regular strong spark then check for fuel. As stated the fuel pump runs for a few seconds when you turn the key to the on position to pressurize the fuel rail. Should be +32psi if pump is right and you should smell gas in the exhaust when cranking. If the pump is isn't putting out then change the relays as others have said. If it didn't start on starting fluid then I doubt that it is fuel related. If you have a weak spark like you mentioned then it is most likely the ignition amplifier or coil. Injectors leaking down could cause it to flood too which might explain why it is starting with the throttle wide open. Was the smoke black?

Or a leaking injector(s) bleeding off fuel pressure. If you were to turn the key on, hear the pump run for a few seconds, hear the relay drop out, turn the key off, wait until the main relay drops out. I'd do this a couple of times to see if priming the fuel rail makes a difference in starting as a quick test? If it were in the shop, it would have a fuel pressure tester hooked up to monitor fuel pressure activity, but the other way is a quick test to see if it's bleeding down....

I should have read all of Mike's post!

Thanks for the responce I have checked most of these items.
Let me update on what I have found, coolant temp sensor is bad, telling the ecm the engine is at operating temp. The mass air flow sensor is nasty causing a lean burn when it is running. I will have parts in the am and I hope it fixed the problem.

UPDATE: I am not convinced this has fixed my problem as the temperture is not getting below freezing at night, and it seems that is when I had the starting problem. Never the less temp sensor was only $24.00, I have replaced more expensive parts with less results.

Scott, It started no problem, that is why I think the ambient temp is the factor in it not starting, 40 degrees for a low last night. Until it gets below freezing again I'm not sure replacing the temp sensor was the fix to the problem.
