Question New Member - Help Needed on new NAS D90

Greetings - I've only been a member of this forum for the past week, and I've already learned a ton from reading through the content. Awesome forum, and I've seen many impressive builds. I'm trying to find a used 1997 D90 Wagon, and I located one that I'm taking a very close look at. I was hoping for some help on (1) what the fair market pricing is and (2) if there are any red flags from the pictures I've received of the chassis. Unfortunately, the car is in Florida while I'm in Chicago, so pictures are the best I have to go off of at this juncture.

I'm told this truck was legitimatley imported from Japan, which I don't believe would create an issue unless someone could tell me otherwise. It has 27k miles on the odo and the exterior appears to be in perfect shape from the pictures I've seen (it was refreshed by a body shop to prep it for sale). Assuming everything checks out mechanically, what is a fair price for this truck? The owner (a D90 used car specialist) is asking ~$50k, but that sounds rich, even for a perfect truck. $45k sounds more reasonable to me. I don't mind paying up for whatever the truck is worth, but I don't want to take a big hit if I decide to sell it next year (not that that's my intention).

And now for the chassis condition. I've learned tons about the perilous rust that can attack the frames and bodies of these trucks. Everything looked pretty reasonable to me from these pictures, but please let me know if you see anything that would be cause for concern. More pictures can also be found here: http://s280.photobucket.com/albums/k...D90/?start=all

Thanks in advance for your help, and I look forward to participating in this great forum as an owner. Cheers.

Thumbs up

First, welcome to the forum and potential Rover ownership. There are some threads here on Japan D90 imports. Looks like the truck has been waxoyled at some time, which can be good but it can also hide the rust worm. Any pix of the rear cross member? They are known for rotting out. Somebody here probably is close to the truck's location to give it a look over for you. For 50K, I'd take a trip down to inspect it.

Good luck with your search!

50G is nothing, didn't you just buy your 16 year old son a Maybach?

Thanks for your input. I agree it looks like there's waxoyl in a few spots, but not everywhere. I certainly wouldn't buy it without seeing it, but I don't want to waste time flying down there if there's something I'm not seeing or this asking price isn't even in the ballpark.

I'll ask for a photo of the rear crossmember.

I did indeed, but I purchased it through Bad Boy records, so I can get a tax break from the depreciation. It's Bad Boy, baby. I can't stop. I won't stop.

Is this the Japanese 50th anniversary model? Seems a bit steep to me otherwise, even at 45k. There is very little difference between the Japanese spec and the NAS D90s so I start to wonder what you're really paying for at that price. For 50k How about that sweet red d90 on fleabay with the Jurassic park dino paint work instead?

There is a NAS 97 LE for sale here locally in Scottsdale for $44k and he'd probably negotiate. Its up on Fleabay but he's posted it up on the local club email list as well.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1997-...item35aa14d59f

I don't know the truck or the seller.

AFAIK the Japanese trucks will not be considered "NAS" by the purists, so if you are willing to shell out this kind of money for a defender, I'd go for a real NAS. That said it sure does look rust free.

I'll be in the Orlando area next week if you need someone to do a pre-check on it and it happens to be nearby.

It seems that, that truck has been on the market for quite a while. Additionally, as far as I know, the Japanese trucks were purchased pretty cheap then imported, so there should be plenty of room to negotiate.

But, I would pick up a true NAS truck from a reputable dealer or private party. Check with Copley Motors in MA, or wait for a pristine truck to show up here.

I would not worry about the mileage, focus on maintenance and rust. Last year buddy of mine sold a pristine AA Yellow 97 ST for $32K. There are plenty of great deals available on ST and SW, especially with this economy.

Seems like you could get a cleaner 90 for 50K if you were willing to look around and wait for a little while.

It looks like there is oil or coolant on the bell housing in one of the pictures.

rear door card is torn and looks like there is rust or something on the bottom of the door

Lots of little surface rust here and there that should be cleaned up before it starts to become a larger issue. I would also want to see pictures of the front floor board and the rear cross member backside and front side. Living out west maybe I am a little more critical than the east coast guy but I think you could find one with less rust / surface rust out west.

Just does not seem worth the asking price to me

thanks for everyone's comments. I can't tell you how helpful it is to hear your thoughts. Regarding the bell housing, I'm told that they just replaced the rear main seal on the engine, which may explain why there was some oil leaking. they also just replaced the fuel pump because it was becoming loud, and they suspected it was next to go.

unfortunately, I am a bit pressed for time as I sold my previous car last week, so I'm currently without transportation. that said I wouldn't buy this truck if it was a bad decision. I'm gonna go back and see if he'll let it go for somewhere in the low 40's. I don't mind overpaying by a few thousand for what looks like an amazing truck, but I just don't want to pay somewhere in the 40's and have it be worth 10k less next year.

regarding the LE for sale, I'd snap that up in a heart beat if I could fit the roof rack in my parking garage. I love the willow green and the whole truck looks amazing.

If time is short, I second going to Copley. I think you would be much better off and have a nice selection.

The LE is really nice, just take the rack off and throw it back on if you ever sell it.

There are 6 1997 D90's SW for sale in Montreal at under 40K$ Canadian http://montreal.kijiji.ca/c-cars-veh...AdIdZ211241395

This works out to 38896$US These are probably US trucks to start, as they (SW's) where not sold in Canada as far as I know. If this is the case then they may be eligible to re-enter the USA. They seem in great condition and with low millage.

These don't appear to be from the US upon first impression. The front side-facing marker lights are too small and too-far set back to be from here. Probably from Japan as well.

Marc-Andre, I just got back from Montreal late Sunday from your F1 event. Great to be back up there after last year's F1 problems! My ears are still ringing.

I'd give the Copley guys a call if you need something quick and can spend in the $40k range. Just a quick view of their site shows some pretty tasty 90's on the lot. That '95 SW from ECR with the 4.6 and galvy frame is

guys - thanks again for all of the recommendations. After some careful deliberation, I'm gonna steer clear of the Japanese 90. From what I can tell, they're typically worth $10k to $15k less than the NAS counterparts since the Japanese cars do not come with any documented history from before they get to the states. Even though this truck appears to be a true 27k mile car, without proof, it's simply not worth the money they're asking.

I spoke with someone at Copley and while they don't have anything at the moment that seems particularly appealing, they said they get new inventory regularly. They had one that would have been perfect for me, but two different people called within the last 24 hours saying they would take it. I also spoke with Stephen at Landroversforsale.com and he said they just took in an Arles blue one owner truck with 24k miles, which may be just what I'm looking for.

I'm glad you guys were able to steer me clear of hastily overpaying for a truck, as I was ready to take the truck in my initial post pending some reasonable negotiations. I've got enough good leads that I should be able to find the right truck within the next few weeks.

I look forward to joining the club.

Personally, a Japanese 1997 D90 would not bother me. Also, keep in mind only some (based on a date cutoff) are legal to import to the US.

For 50k, I would buy the 1994 hella edition ECR is selling (they are asking 58 but selling off some goodies would get you down close to 50k). Quality rebuilds will be leaps and bounds better than a stocker, especially because you live in Illinois and after a few years, anything not galvanized will begin to rust and ruin the value of the truck (assuming you actually drive it).

Ron

edit: blue ECR one sold in a matter of a couple days.
