For a rear winch, I would suggest a worm drive. Husky 8 or 10. You do not need speed there, but having a 100% reliable brake is very important for lowering down hills.

I'm sure you could make up a cover for the D2 ARB if you really wanted...

Not an D2 ARB, I cut the centre out of the bumper and welded in a strong plate instead and now it's up on top and can be covered.

Why not? I've seen them and it should be no big deal. You are just keeping the sun off of the rope...

No, they completely fill up with slush and salt all winter because they're open on the back and the winch is mounted below the bumper directly in the road-spray. Salt crystals cut just about anything over time. Covering just the top might reduce UV exposure but it certainly won't keep things properly protected.

OK, thank you to all who gave their opinion. I think I will look for a Warn 9.5ti and 8274 and see what kind of prices I find...

------ Follow up post added February 24th, 2011 09:43 PM ------

Found the Warn 9.5si (MOSFET) which may operate at -40 for a few hundreds more. best price for 9.5ti was just under 1000$ and 1449$ for the SI.

Any toughs on this ?

It does seem a better choice and also does not need solenoids for the install.

The 9.5SI Mosfet is discontinued. I would go with a TI for parts availability.

my 9.5ti on a Rockware bumper. I'm in year 7 with no issues.
