NEED HELP starter fire!!

went out to my d90 at lunch and tried to turn the truck over and it was turning over and then POP and black smoke coming out of my steering colum, hit it with the fire extinguisher within 20 seconds, but won't turn over.
WHAT THE $%^%$ HAPPENED???

I would think the ignition switch let it's smoke out, what did it smell like? Was there any flames? Can you pull the dash off and take pics!

Smoke is good! It lets you know what broke!

did't see any flames, smelled electrical. i did take the dash apart, no flame damage and can't see what might be wrong?? do you know, and could tell me how i can hot wire so i can get home??

a friend was telling me i could do it with just s screwdriver touching two wires on the ignition coil??

I think you're going to have to short the starter, not the coil. Use Mike's method if you want to get home without electrocuting yourself.

You can short the solinoid to get it cranking, but that doesn't mean it will run it will only crank the engine. There are other things that get popwer when the key is turnned and not being there I can't see if they are getting power any more. Dos anything happen when you turn the key to the on position not the start position that made it smoke.

yes, it beeps cuz the door is open and the headlights turn on, the turn signals don't work...

very troubling day!! called my buddy he has a duce and a half, he is going to drive it out and we are going to put it in there. Thanks for all the help, calle dthe dealer and was thinking of taking it there next week but am unsure, i worry about the bill i will recieve and if they know what they are doing....

Now I Try And Put The Truck Into Nuetral To Push It Into The Shop And It Won't Go Into Any Positions.

Check your fuse's I bet one of the 30 amper's under the hood is out. Replace it and if she don't blow then you should be able to start it with the screwdriver trick.
