Need help from a NJ resident

I have a NAS 110 here from a customer in NJ that is in pretty rough shape (body-wise). The customer wants us to make it ready for NJ inspection. Only issue is that I have no idea what that means. How much does NJ look at? Is it just the usual lights and all, or do they care about ugly looking rust?
The 110 has a galv frame and great drive-train (Tdi), but the body is getting pretty rough.

Little help??
Thanks!

They check brakes, lights, exhaust, tires, horn,

They do a skid test. Use mirrors to check lights, stick a probe in the tail pipe. Nothing cosmetic.

I've sent some of my cars thru the state run facility and the only issue I had was a headlight was out and an ECU reset. It's free so I dealt with the lines and hassle. They seemed more concerned about the lights/blinkers working and whatever the emissions readout said. IIRC, I saw a car with pretty worn tires get a sticker.

For my 90, I took it to the local garage that works on it - didn't seem to have a problem passing but it doesn't have too much rust. I would recommend a private garage that he knows if he is worried. I did that when I had my allroad with tint all around.

BTW, what do you guys classify as "pretty rough"?

my 1991 Range rover passed inspection and it was very rusty. Holes in sills, rear crossmember, lower tailgate etc. Of course, the body looked ok. That was also at a private shop. Cost like $50 but I didnt want to wait in line on the weekend.

make sure there are no brush guards over the lights (like grates surrounding them... my d90 actually passed, but my D2 failed) ...

Rust wasn't an issue when I went...

I also brought my D2 trail truck there with a few dents (such as a door completely caved in), no problems..

I did fail a few years ago for low brakes though.

My d-90 had cappings rusted out, rear tire carrier rusted, and also a fist size hole in the driver foot well, and passed without a problem.

DMV / MVS got 100x better in the past few years... in and out in less than 20 minutes most times.. some late weeknight times too.. I'll never pay to get it inspected again (unless of course, it wont pass normally)

Its a good truck actually (galv frame, 300 Tdi, updated dash, etc). We did the truck a long time ago (frame, Tdi, etc) and the customer was going to bring it back for a body restoration once the body wore out, but time goes on and the money never came his way, so we are looking to do some patching so that he can keep it on the road.

Its the bulkhead and the T supports that are the "rough" parts.

Thanks for the feedback, sound like if we get it in reasonable shape it will be OK.

All the above and be sure there are no brush guard in front and/or rear lights.

Mike,

It is a joke as far as inspections go.

Here are the requirements:

http://www.njinspection.com/

Here is a "list" of things it needs to pass:

http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/Inspectio...erstanding.htm

One caveat, I am not sure whether it needs diesel emissions test or not and that could be a PITA.
