Need Help Diagnosing Odd Sound

Ok... 97 (auto) runs/drives/shifts great.

Once the engine warms up, I stop completely, put it in reverse and can hear a subtle grinding/gravelly sound... almost like a loose heat shield rattling. The noise occurs when stopped... as soon as I start moving, I can't hear the noise again. I have not observed the noise when the engine is cold.

I have checked underneath, but can't pinpoint the origin (no loose heat shields). Seems to only happen when in reverse, but have on only a few occasions noticed the noise when stopped and in drive.... trans/xfer case?

Mechanic is taking a look later this week, but thought I'd check with the pros first

Cheers!

Sounds like a bad cat? Marbles in a can? Stops when the rpms start to climb. Does it only at idle?

Maybe... except I replaced the cats/y-pipe only about 1-2 years ago. Less marbles in can and more like gargling gravel when in gear (reverse), but silent in neutral.

Not sure. Try to isolate the sound. Sometimes the pump in the transmission makes a noise like that. It would be about all that would be spinning in that situation.

Try checking your exhaust and tighten all the bolts connecting your muffler to your cats and your tail pipe . My vehicle makes these noises after a good offroad pounding and all it takes is the above to fix it .

Follow-up post: When the truck warmed up... the passenger side cat was just barely touching the frame which created the noise I was hearing. Readjusted and re-tightened everything and it is all better... thanks for all the tips!
