NAS Defender w 2.8L Diesel

I am looking at purchasing a 94 NAS Defender. Found one with a 2.8L International Diesel, is this better than the standard V8? Is there a downside to that motor? I believe Jim Pendleton did the conversion...

Thanks!
John

More torque, less power, better mileage.

There's a 2.8 in this D110. I know the owner of the truck, and he very happy with it. (how could you not be?) This is one gorgeous truck.

IMO, it seems to be largely a "Grass is always greener' scenario.. Europe got the diesels, and pined for the V8 sent to the yanks, and we got the V8 and pine for the Diesels..

What Red said is all true. That said, they way you are going to drive it probably defines if it is better for you or not. If you plan to do alot of offload driving, or take extended vehicle dependent trips, you will probably be much happier with the diesel's low down torque, and longer range (courtesy of better fuel efficiency).

If you are going to use your Defender more as an on-road toy, you will probably prefer the V8.

I love the sound of the V8 in my NAS 90, but the Diesel is really more in-line with the Defender's core heritage\capabilities..

As a Plus, Jim's work is well regarded, so you have the comfort of knowing it was done well..

Agreed! Drool...

P.S. - Don't forget to make sure registering it in your state is not going to be a problem. Some states are friendly to engine conversions, others not so much..

Thanks guys. Very helpful. What about the noise factor? Are the diesels much louder?

I believe that's a known truck here. Can't remember exactly but is it white?

Personally, I would love to have a Diesel engine in my NAS for the basic benefits mentioned.
Though, it's hard for me to justify gutting a NAS for it.

That depends on the engine and installation. I have one Defender with the Rover 2.5NA and a second with the Rover 300Tdi. The 300Tdi is much quieter than the 2.5NA despite having 60% more horse power.

Sorry, I've not heard a International 2.8, so can't compare.

They are definitely a lot louder than the V8. The 2.8 was a development of the 300tdi.

They're equally noisy. My NAS V8 with Magnaflow exhaust had a sweet sound. My 300tdi sounds like a tractor(which I love).

It's about as noisy as a FedEx Sprinter van. Not as loud as a UPS truck.

Best comparison I can come up with.

Sorry! They both just passed my house and that's what came to mind.
