Any idea if you have lockers of some sort? Would be pretty weird installing 4.75s without lockers and heavy duty half shafts.

As it sits today I can't find any sign of a locker system. The two guys that owned it over the last 10 years used the truck as a grocery getter, and didn't put many miles on it. If it had lockers it would have been the first owner that owned from 94-04. He also had to be the person that changed the gearing.

Do you have the names of the previous owners?

Check here and see if they listed mods/gearing...Defender Owners - Defender Source

The test for Lockers is more fun than checking gear ratios. dde1c

And make some extra $$ while he is at it. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a 4:75 Detroit truetrac / locker setup from GBR. It would get snapped up quick here.
ionfender - any chance the 3rds/pumpkins are painted dark green?

Beefy one on the left is a 4:11/Detroit GBR product, Right one is a stock open 3:54.

Here is the Truetrac with stock 3:54. The cheesy red paint was a surprise from the diff shop. I didn't ask or want it.

Guys - couple quick questions I thought of while i was driving:

-what age range of Discos run the 3.54 I'm looking for?

-any particular/specific gear lube that should be used in the diff. housings once the 3.54 is in?

-IF a PO put in heavy duty half shafts to go along with the 4.75 gears, will the heavy duty half shafts mesh up perfectly with the 3.54?

All discos have a 3.54. Any regular gear oil. Yes, the shaft will work with the new gears.

Here is an idea ..... Given your 3-4" lift, slap on a set of Michelin XZL16x9 tires (~36" dia) on some Wolfs. That would solve your low gearing and look great. Someone post an example photo of this setup.

down_shift - why didn't mention that right way...we could have skipped this week long charade. kidding. but i like that your coming at this gearing issue from a different angle. and yes, i would also love to see a pic of one rigged up like this.

it is my goal to get this thing regeared and take the lift down. something closer to stock is preferred.

cue the pictures of the 5 inch lift with XZLs

Guys - Operation Diff. Swap was success. It's cruising like a dream at 65 MPH and my RPMs are right on top of the Ashcroft specs. So much more enjoyable to drive now. Thanks for all your help!!!!!!!
