Cool Microcat and Windows 7

Anyone able to get Land Rover's parts software Microcat to work with Windows 7 if so what did you do to trick it into working ?

What does it do when you try? Have you tried, as a start, compatibility settings?

I'm a Mac guy, but I know we have a PC here just to run Microcat and it is Windows XP. There was something about it had to be a 16 bit system, not a 32 bit system because Microcat would not run on the newer system. I probably botched that terminology so forgive me (I'm a mechanic, not a computer guy ). We also have the "dongle" as we are authorized to use it, so not sure if that helps at all.

That may be it. I'll try it on my XP laptop. It loads on Windows 7 and then Windows goes nuts and says your version of Windows is pirated etc (this after you have already registered it successfully) and the screen goes to a black background.

Most likely 32bit rather than 64bit (16bit is REALLY OLD ). Windows 7 64bit has better 32bit emulation than XP 64 did so 32bit applications generally work better in 7 64bit than XP 64bit.

If it is an issue like that you might want to try virtualization of a 32bit windows XP install to save you from having to completely change your operating system. Not to mention 7 is a much better OS in pretty much every way (minus people getting used to it).

I'd make sure you try playing with compatibility settings (particularly running as administrator) before you go too much farther.

Install is fairly involved (2 pages of step by step come with the cd). When it created the numerous registry errors I deleted it completely just to get Windows 7 to work again @ all. I had it working on my old desk top and need to use it like yesterday.

Going to try the laptop and hope for different results.

If you do want to try it, however (and you have 7 pro, ultimate, or enterprise), try grabbing this: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/vir.../download.aspx

If you don't, I can set you up with another free solution.

Ah gotcha. Sounds like poor forward compatibility on the developers part. I've never used the program, so I've no idea what it's like. Since you have an XP machine that's probably the easiest way to go

Also try right clicking the main .exe file (that the shortcut to run points to) have set it to run in Admin mode and in Windows XP compatibility mode (after installing the plugin linked above by Chris)

We have a few apps here @ work that running it like this fixed.

I couldn't even get Microcat to work with XP, but didn't try hard. It's works fine with 2000. Sounds like I didn't try hard enough.

front door harness, driver, PL, PW YMM000281
front door harness, passenger, PL, PW YMM000321
rear side doors w PL LRO16439
switches for the dash YUF101521LNF

Doug,

As Jim explained in post 13, I have the "FREE" microcat version, and runs in every system I have ( XP,Vista and 7 )

The downgrade to compatibility it is done automatically once you have installed the patch.

Figures you would. I have the legit CD sent to me by a dealer in the UK I have ordered a bunch of parts from but no dongle.

I realize this doesn't directly address the issue of running this piece of software on Win7 but ...

If you're using a Mac and you need to run the occasional piece of Windows software, have you considered VMWare Fusion or Parallels Desktop? Either (they're competing applications that do the same thing) allow you to run any flavor of Windows (or Intel-based Linux) natively on your Mac within Mac OS X.

The coolest part IMO is setting it up such that your Windows app resides on the OS X Dock and behaves more or less just like a Macintosh application. Well, except for app's own UI.

Not for my truck Richard. but thanks for your opine. Recall you having said that 5 doors is a lot to go around locking. Methinks you are an armchair overlander.
