Mazda 3.5 tdi install to camel trophy 110

Soooo, I have decided to change the 200 tdi lt77 out of my camel trophy defender 110 as I am tipping the scales at about 8000 lbs when in expedition mode.. And while the 200 tdi has done very admirably I am just looking to get a bit more oomph.. So I stumbled across a complete mazda 3.5 tdi setup out of a defender 130, and it happened to come attached to an r-380 trans and a bonus of the electrically operated overdrive... All research shows that performance figures on the 3.5 tdi are comparable to a efi v8 but with better 50-90 mph times.. 5 seconds instead of 9..??.. And still returning an average of 27 mpg (not sure if that was US or UK gallons)... Reported top speed of 107 mph (depending on gearing)... Now I'm not expecting (or game enough) to do that in my 110 but they are supposed to pull like a freight train up till the governed 3650 rpm...
Anyone got any input on any of this..???
And noooo, I am not selling my 200 tdi combo... It's going into my 1986 camel trophy defender 90...

Dude... I hate you i finally got mine running well! Last trip ran well, stayed at 190 degrees at 65mph on the flats. Pulled a long steep hill 4th gear 45mph at 205-210 without the black plume of smoke.

Now you tell me there is an option for more power!?!!

These engines were in obviously Mazda T3500 trucks; however, they were also in Ford Traders sold in Australia and elsewhere. So I was going to post to you the link for the engine repair manual when I bought mine but it doesn't exist anymore. The last available print edition from the only place I found them new was in Sept 2012... So if you need anything specific let me know and I can scan them for you.

Get used to slightly pricey spares. http://www.mdengineering.co.uk/ They still stock them completely and will ship very quickly and international. M&D is easy to deal with, answer the phone, and will ship out the day you order it.

It's a really fun engine.

There is also some decent info in older LRMs with project Pilgrim(yellow 130 that a guy put this engine into).

Yeah... I saw that its a common engine in OZ and since I'm taking it back home to there it made sense.. Gonna try and get some info on install layout from m&d and will see what manuals I can dig up.. Gotta replace some heat shields and some gaskets etc before she goes into the camel...

If you can find it used 1989 Model Ford Trader repair manual WM222 book 1 of 2 is the engine manual. It's got everything you need in it. It's overkill as it's every model of the engine but has all the SL35TI repair and maintenance jobs.

Out of curiosity do you have or can you post up a picture of how the bell housing sits around the starter on yours?

I'm ashamed of that section.. It was butchered.. I am going to have to make a cover plate.. They cut out a 6" square hole when all they needed was a 2 inch strip.. Will post a pic of it later..

Thanks. I didn't know what to do on mine so it got cut exactly in the shape of where the starter is. In the one pic it looked like a large hole on yours but wasn't sure.

I have an LT85. No overdrive so I went with the 1.003. 1st gear is nice cruising the neighborhood at 15mph not awkward like most 1st gears where all you want to do is up shift. 2nd gear is good to drive 30 on base. 3rd is useful from 25 to 45-50. 4th good from 40mph to about 70. 5th is a no go below 50mph and acts more like an overdrive except you can keep on accelerating to who knows what speed as it's uncomfortable going faster than 80 IMO. Hills require a downshift depending on size from 5th to 4th on the highway but again you could cruise in 4th all day at 65mph and it wouldn't be a big deal with the ratio. I just recently got full size Allisport inter cooler and there is a full size radiator on the way. I'll post up some pics once I get them installed and let you know how it performs.
