Mayday - Help needed in Georgia...

Hey guys, took a road trip and on our way back to Jersey, along I-185, about 80 miles from Atlanta, I smelled something burning... I pulled over (or at least attempted to) and the car stalled. I popped open the hood and the alternator was smoking like crazy.

Now I can't start and I'm pretty sure I fried the alternator. I'm 900 miles from home with my family and I was wondering if anyone is in the area. Cell phone is (201)560-2981. Any help is appreciated!

Same thing happened to me last year. Called uhaul and trailered it the rest of the trip. I made a quick stop into a parts store to look for a compatible alternator with no luck. You have lots of options between Atl and NJ so you shouldn't have to trailer all the way home if it comes down to it.

What are you driving and why can't it start?

If its a v-belt and the alternator is seized, you can remove the belt and it should allow the engine to turn freely and you should be able to drive for a while on the battery alone. At least to get to safety/help.

85 ROW 110 with 300tdi, it's a serpentine belt. Waiting on AAA now but don't know where to have it towed. Completed 2100 miles on the journey with no worries and all of sudden... Bam!

I forgot my credentials to birmabright brotherhood, ill see if I can reset. Thanks again.. Anyone know of a reputable shop in GA? I'm by westpoint GA I believe. I-185 north bound right before exit 30.

Any help much appreciated! Thanks guys!

I called you 20 minutes ago and left a voice mail.
You're coupla hundred miles from me but I called Wynn442 (he doesn't live far) but he's out of town. We've got a couple of members in Columbus but I don't have contact info.
Sorry, hopefully others will see this.

With the serp, your easiest might be to source another alternator. Otherwise if you find a shorter belt you can drive for hours in daylight on a battery. You could buy an extra and charge up at an auto parts store along the way if needed, and swap batteries if you die.

I PM'd you a list of everyone from GA. I'd start with Scott, Tom, and Shawn who are members here.

Good luck,
charles

Thanks Charles! I just spoke with Sam (smac) and he's on his way to help!

Now if I can find an alternator! I'm running out of charge on my cell but my alt number is (201)742-2300.

Anyone have a 300tdi alternator close by? Thanks!

Anyone have a part number for a shorter belt that would work to bypass the alt?

On another note, if anyone has a lead on a 300 alt somewhere in the Georgia Alabama area tonight/tomorrow, Id be more than happy to come pick it up.....

I guess considering how old our trucks are now, the brotherhood thing is a great idea.

Thanks to Sam, my family is resting comfortably at the hotel!

Sam, we can't thank you enough for the hospitality!

Now on to searching an alternator.

Just thinking out loud, is there a way to make the bad alternator just to freewheel?

Thanks again for everyone that called me! Scott, sorry I wasn't able to get back to you, everything was happening so fast!!!!

I hope to make it out of GA this weekend.

Thanks again and if you have any leads for an alt in GA, please let me know. Thanks!

Hello Fellas

just read through this post and ended up genuinely moved at the helpfulness and care you guys have shown towards this chap in distress. Great to know the LR spirit is alive and thriving across the pond.

We have a similar site over here in the UK - www.landyzone.co.uk - where we have help, tips, swaps, advice, for sale, and even a courier service for moving stuff around the country.

Check it out - especially good section on engines.

I have also noticed a lot of the guys on here are serving and retired forces people.

It is the same in the uk - lots of ex Navy, RAF and Army guys own land rovers.

Fraternal best wishes to all of you from Griffman in Surrey

I had the same thing happen a year or two ago. There is supposed to be an aluminum pie plate on the back of the alternator to reflect heat from the turbo away from the alternator. Absent that they die
