Question Making exterior decals last

I purchased a set of those 16" land rover decals for my Defender rear quarterpanels, and I'll be putting some DAP American flag and other decals on later. On my last Disco, I added decals as well, and they faded and peeled after about a year, and wanted to know if there are any tricks to making decals last a good long time. Thinking about things like spraying with clear enamel or acrylic paint over the top of the applied decal. Clearly, wax ain't gonna cut it.

Any lasting tricks appreciated.

Laminate the sticker first, (Kinkos) than stick it on with silicone or adhesive tape/spray.

From all the decal applications I've seen nothing is coated onto them. I'm afraid if you start with a crappy quality decal nothing will help it.
